If you are looking for a sea facing picture postcard golf course to play while in Phuket, the Jack Nicklaus designed course at Mission Hills Golf Resort and Spa in Phuket is the one to play. The golf course sits among mangrove forests on the scenic north-east coast of Phuket. The course has incredible ocean views from almost every hole and even includes several ocean holes playing out over the Andaman Sea like you sometimes see on the televised PGA tournaments.

Large white sand beach bunkers contrast with the translucent blue hues of the ocean waters and the vibrant greens of the Paspalum Sea Isle 1 grass on the fairways and Paspalum Sea Isle 2000 grass on the putting surfaces. The ocean views come at a price, as water comes in to play on seven holes and the prevailing sea breezes make play at certain times of the day very tricky.Jack Nicklaus designed some distinguishing features at Mission Hills Phuket. The top holes include the par five 2nd hole requires two well-placed shots to give the golfer a reasonable third shot into the island green. Also, the 4th which is the first of the ocean holes, and a medium-length par three with spectacular views across the sea. The putting surface is an island of grass in a sea of white sand.

The par 4, 5th hole plays to an island green from an island tee. A huge sandy waste near the beach with a strong elevation change that runs through the middle of the fairway also adds to the excitement of the hole.

The signature 12th hole and handicap 1 is the longest par 4 on the golf course, measuring 481 yards from the black tees! To reach the green in regulation and make par, two big straight hits are required, or an accurate one-chip and one-putt for a shorter hitter. The tee shot needs to carry well above 250 yards from the black tees, and land on the left hand side of the fairway,. This will give the shortest and best angle in to a well guarded green.

The difficult green is protected by a lake down the right hand side and a deep hollow to the left, penalizing those bailing out to stay away from the water. If you are fortunate to land your second shot safely on the green, or close by, you should walk away happy with a par, or even a respectable bogey. Whatever the outcome, take your time on this most difficult hole and appreciate the breathtaking ocean view by the green and panoramic mountain peaks in the distance.

Played in October. Great clubhouse and range facilities. Course design is pretty dull, looks like an open park with lots of holes packed together. A couple of holes do have stunning sea views. Glad I played it for the experience but probably wouldn't go back

Sad to see such a beautiful setting not rewarded by a well-managed and rewarding golf course. Fairways and greens are no better than when I played the course on the opening week. Very disappointing. Drainage on the course is apalling. Also, why no snacks or food available on the course? Must have something to do with such a low # of players - no doubt due to the high price = low value. Hope the mgmt gets its act together some day, as the course has great potential.

We played there on 14th of april, the fairways are burnt and muddy, the greens are like bouncy castles you never know where the ball will jump to, bunkers are washed out and the caddies are inexperienced yet the club recommends minimum 300 baht tips. At least speed of play was good since there was no one else there. For that kind of money it's easily the worst golfing experience in Thailand.

Jan 2006. Money cannot buy everything. Compared with any J.N. Design course, this one was not in good shape. Although carts are compulsory play was extremely slow on a course that was not crowded. 5 hours (maybe also with 90° rule for carts). The vistas to the Bay make up a bit for this, but I am not sure if I want to go back.

Had a game on 31 Aug 06 ,the fairways and greens were soaked , most bunkers were washed out. Very disappointed after paying such high fees for such a course . Buggy is compulsory which added to the price.

I went to Phuket last month and play there on the weekday, the Golf Course should not hurry to open since the course is in the very bad condition. However, the layout is look nice. If any of you go there, and find out that the course is in good condition pls. posting your comment, caz i might go there again.

The course design is excellent, very links like. With the sea wind a factor makes the game quite tough on this course as it is an open course plan near the sea, and closed with trees inland giving the golfer two different experiences over the 18-holes. Only the greens let the course down.

Disappointed as the fairways have hardly got any grass on them. How can they charge so much if the course is worse than any in Phuket. Also what is the point of compulsory golf carts for able bodied people on such a flat course??? Nice location though and an exceptional club house.
